Sustainable Housing Programme: Pilots in Construction Materials and Layout- Energy Efficient Building Design in Ashramshala

This case study is about an Ashramshala where MHT with support from SELCO Foundation have done a pilot project with Eco-construction material & energy efficient technology. This Ashramshala is a residential school for rural students in and around Vyara. Energy needs of this multi-purpose Ashramshala were identified. This space had a partially covered tin-sheet roof, and was too hot and congested for all 80 students to sit and have their meals together. Hence, the sustainable technology used here were Honeycomb panels and PUF insulated panels through prefabricated construction, which keeps the indoor temperature of this space 4-5◦C degree cooler. Also the built-space was expanded to avoid congestion. An On grid 3kw hybrid Solar system was installed to curb electricity expenditure. Additionally, 4 cook stoves were provided to accelerate the food preparation time and avoid smoke called due to wood smoke.
